The Grain of Gratitude: This is Bali’s Love for People and the Planet

(Baliekbis.com), Nestled in the cultural heart of the island, This is Bali is more than a restaurant—it is a tribute to Balinese tradition, wellness, and sustainability. With a deep appreciation for local flavors and conscious living, the restaurant has taken a meaningful step forward by joining the Save Subak initiative: a movement to preserve Bali’s traditional irrigation system and empower organic farmers.

By March 2025, This is Bali had sourced over 1 ton of organic rice, supporting the conservation of 40 are of Subak farmland. This contribution translates to the empowerment of two organic farmers, the saving of approximately 1,150,000 liters of water, and a reduction of 74,470 kg of CO₂e emissions. In 2024 alone, 670 kg of organic rice was sourced—an early sign of the restaurant’s growing impact.

The initiative has received warm recognition from Ichan Putra, of Save Subak:

This is Bali shows that a restaurant can be more than a place to eat—it can be a force for social and environmental good. Their commitment to sourcing organic local rice brings real impact, supporting the land, farmers, and future generations of Bali.”

Bu Dayu, HR representative of This is Bali, shared:

“We are deeply devoted to supporting local farmers and organic produce, and with this, contribute to a more sustainable Bali.”

“Our owner conducted blind tests from various vendors, and the rice from Save Subak’s partner farmers stood out for its quality and distinct flavor.”

“Our culinary concept is not only about uniqueness, but also about offering healthy, high-quality food. That’s why we prioritize working with vendors who support organic and sustainable farming.”

She also mentioned that This is Bali is currently renovating its second floor to expand seating, which is likely to increase organic rice usage even further in 2025.

True to its name, This is Bali reflects the essence of the island—not only through its authentic dishes but also through values that align with Save Subak: promoting healthy, organic food while honoring Balinese cultural and ecological heritage. The restaurant’s dedication has earned it not only the Save Subak Contributor Certificate, but also recognition as a Best Customer Satisfaction award—a testament to its meaningful role in the community.

The Save Subak movement continues to invite culinary and hospitality businesses to be part of this shared mission. Adopting organic rice is more than a sustainable decision—it is a heartfelt commitment to preserving the spirit of Bali for generations to come.
